Made for Benson and signed by them on the dial and movement, this is a Tavannes model 939.
It is crown wound, set with a split plate 15 Jewel movement. The movement has a Swiss lever escapement with a double roller and an Elinvar over-sprung screwed balance.
Serial number dates the watch to 1933.
Advertised by Benson sales as the “City Watch”.
The case is English made, double backed and triple hinged, with Birmingham Hallmarks for Sterling Silver, 1933/34.
Also has the maker’s mark of Dennison who bought out Benson Brothers (no relation to J.W Benson) in 1933/34, meaning they now had a long term contract to supply J.W Benson with cases from 1935 onwards. In general they reverted to using the Benson mark.
